Hourglass

I watch grains fall
from top to bottom
I watch time pass
I make time pass
by watching

It accumulates like waste
around the sewer mouth
I watch time collect
I make it accrue
by watching

Every grain adds a terror
some new idea
of failure
of inadequacy
don’t look at me

All the grains fall into the bottom
the motion has stopped
the sand has stopped
time has stopped
I turn it over

I watch grains fall
